Physical Education

A high quality PE curriculum will provide the opportunity for progression across the full breadth of the PE National Curriculum for FS2,  KS1 and KS2. In FS2 & KS1, it should focus on the development of the fundamental skills that will be built upon in KS2 when they are applied in more specific sports. PE helps to develop a lifelong love of physical activity, sport and PE in all young people. The teaching of this should help ensure a positive and healthy physical and mental outlook in the future and help young people to develop essential skills like leadership and teamwork. Within each lesson, we strive to give every child the opportunity to develop skills in PE, consider the impact on their health and fitness, compete/perform and evaluate.

Teaching physical education should equip pupils to learn about the relationships between exercise and health, while acquiring basic body management skills such as: spatial awareness; anatomical knowledge, agility, balance and coordination as well as simple movement patterns.

At Whiston Worrygoose Primary School we believe PE & Sport plays an important role in making our vision statement a reality for every pupil, with the potential to change young people’s lives for the better. We have welcomed the Government’s announcement in July 2017 to double the existing Sports Premium to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. We are committed to using this resource in developing high quality PE lessons, alongside greater opportunities for sporting competitions and clubs for all our young people.

At Whiston, we believe it is vital that every child's journey is a magical, exciting time which they cherish and remember. To support this notion, we invite in unique sporting specialists to deliver a one off session for all pupils across our school. Some of these exciting WOW days have included events such as: skateboarding, taekwondo, fencing and hula-hooping.

INTENT

At Whiston Worrygoose, we recognise the fundamental role that regular physical activity plays in children’s lives. As part of our commitment to ensure that all children lead a healthy lifestyle, active learning is at the centre of our pedagogy. We believe every child should have the opportunity to take part in physical activity daily and become more physically confident and competent. We hope that, through all the sporting opportunities and physical activity we offer, the children will potentially develop a love and passion for sport and continue out of school and into their later lives.

IMPLEMENTATION

At Whiston we plan for P.E using the National Curriculum objectives to ensure a robust and thorough approach. Teachers follow the devised unit plans which guarantees a whole school progressive outlook. PE at Whiston Worrygoose Primary School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor & adventure. The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met. Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week, covering the same sporting discipline for the full half term. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities. Lunch time sports clubs are available each day and children can attend before and after school sport clubs too. Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.

IMPACT

At Whiston Worrygoose we help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, we ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows children to develop fundamental skills and apply them to a variety of sports and activities. All children are provided with the necessary skills and given opportunities to demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best. Our pupils are physically active, and this has a positive impact on their learning in the classroom. Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of regular exercise. We aspire for children to enjoy PE and develop a love of sport and physical activity which becomes part of their future life outside of primary school. Children can represent the school at sporting events from local to county level.
